Telecom company Bharti Airtel has reported that its AI-powered spam detection system has successfully flagged 8 billion spam calls and 800 million spam SMSes in just two and a half months. The system has been actively working to combat the growing issue of spam communications following government directives for telecom operators to address the problem. According to Airtel, the AI network identifies nearly 1 million spammers daily. The company launched this AI-driven solution in September to notify customers in real time about suspected spam calls and messages. Over the past two and a half months, the system has alerted 252 million unique customers, resulting in a 12% decrease in the number of customers answering spam calls. Of all the calls on Airtel's network, 6% were identified as spam, while 2% of SMSes were flagged. Interestingly, 35% of spammers were found to use landline phones. The regions most affected by spam calls include Delhi, which leads the list, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Western Uttar Pradesh. In terms of SMSes, Gujarat, Kolkata, and Uttar Pradesh saw the highest volumes. Notably, Mumbai, Chennai, and Gujarat were the most targeted areas for customers receiving spam communications. The study also revealed that spam calls tend to increase in frequency after 9 AM, peaking between noon and 3 PM. On Sundays, however, spam calls dropped by around 40%. In addition, devices priced between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 accounted for 22% of all spam calls. Airtel's AI tool uses sophisticated analysis to track and block these unwanted communications, improving the overall experience for customers. This effort comes as part of broader initiatives by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to curb spam activity and ensure compliance with regulations.
