Google Drive's New Document Scanner Update: Auto-Enhance Feature for Better Quality Scans

Google Drive is rolling out an exciting new feature for its document scanner on Android: an automatic “Enhance” tool designed to improve the quality of scanned documents. This feature, available on the Preview screen after capturing an image, automatically corrects common issues like poor lighting, shadows, and contrast. It also sharpens images, enhances brightness, and applies other useful edits to make documents clearer and more legible.

Previously, Google Drive had made several upgrades to its document scanner, including a custom camera with auto-capture mode, a revamped editing interface, and tools to crop, rotate, and clean scanned images. Users could save scans in JPEG or black-and-white formats. With the latest addition of the “auto enhancements” feature, the app now provides an even more streamlined scanning experience.

Initially available to Google Workspace users, this feature is now expanding to personal Google account holders. Google plans to gradually roll out the feature starting early next year, with both Android and iOS users receiving the update. This means that within the next few weeks, even personal account users will be able to enjoy the improved scanning capabilities.

This enhancement comes on the heels of previous updates, such as the introduction of an Auto-capture toggle last year, which made document alignment easier, and the ability to save scans as JPEGs, which was added in August. Google Drive has also been using machine learning to improve the app’s overall functionality, suggesting titles, automatically capturing documents, and offering a camera viewfinder.

For users on the “Rapid Release” track, the new feature will be available by January 2, 2025, while those on the “Scheduled Release” track can expect it by January 6, 2025.

Google Drive’s Mobile Scanner Now Delivers Sharper, Clearer Scans with Auto-Enhance Feature

Google Drive's document scanner for mobile devices has received another significant upgrade. Following the updates from late last year, which included the ability to apply black and white filters and save scans as PDFs or JPEGs, Google is now adding a powerful auto enhancement feature to improve scan quality even further. This new feature ensures that paper documents are digitized with higher clarity and speed. Auto enhancement automatically corrects issues like white balance, shadows, contrast, sharpness, and lighting, resulting in cleaner, crisper images. With these improvements, scanning documents on Android devices has never been easier or more efficient.
