Spotify has received an update that adds support for Google’s Gemini AI assistant, enabling voice-controlled music searches on Android devices. This new feature, which was first spotted in Google’s code back in June, is now being rolled out to selected Android users, allowing them to search and play music with simple voice commands.
Google has confirmed that more Gemini extensions will be released soon, with over five more expected in the coming weeks. However, some users are still waiting for support for other apps like WhatsApp, Phone, Messages, and Utilities.
The new Gemini extension for Spotify lets users play music by asking for songs, artists, albums, playlists, or even music tailored to a specific activity. However, users will not be able to create playlists or radio stations using this feature.
If you already use another music service, like YouTube Music, you’ll need to specify which service you want Gemini to use when making a request. Once you choose a service, it will become the default for future requests.
To use the Gemini extension, users must link their Spotify and Google accounts and enable Gemini Apps Activity, which lets Google store your AI queries for up to 72 hours. It’s important to note that the extension cannot be used within Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini app on iOS.
Once the extension is enabled, users can use voice commands such as "Play music," "Play [album] on Spotify," or "Play [song name] by [artist name] on Spotify" to control their music experience hands-free.
Spotify is the second third-party app to support the Gemini extension, following WhatsApp, which received Gemini support in October.
