The State Bank of India (SBI) has issued a crucial advisory, warning the public about various cyber scams that are becoming more frequent in India. Cyber criminals are constantly coming up with new tactics to deceive people, and it’s essential to stay alert to avoid falling victim to these schemes.
1) TRAI Phone Scam
Scammers may call pretending to be from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and claim that your mobile services will be suspended due to illegal activity or KYC issues. Remember, TRAI does not have the authority to suspend mobile services; only telecom companies can do that.
2) Customs Parcel Scam
In this scam, fraudsters will contact you, claiming that a parcel meant for you is stuck at customs because it contains illegal items. They may demand a fine to release the parcel. In case you get such calls, report them immediately.
3) Digital Arrest Scam
Cyber criminals may impersonate police officers and threaten you with digital arrests or online interrogations for fabricated criminal activities. Real police authorities do not conduct arrests or interrogations online.
4) Family Member Arrested Scam
This scam involves fraudsters calling to say a family member has been arrested and demanding payment for bail or legal fees. Always verify with your family members before taking any action.
5) Get-Rich-Quick Trading Scam
You might come across ads, especially on social media, promising high returns on specific stock investments. These offers are usually too good to be true and are likely scams.
6) Easy Online Jobs for Big Rewards
Scammers often lure victims by advertising simple online tasks that promise large sums of money. However, they ask for a security deposit upfront, which is the way they trick people. Always be cautious of such schemes.
7) Fake Lottery Win
If you receive an email or message claiming you've won a lottery but asking for your bank details or a security deposit to claim your prize, it's definitely a scam.
8) Mistaken Money Transfer Scam
Be wary if you receive a call or message claiming that an incorrect amount was transferred to your account and asking for a refund. Always verify such claims with your bank before acting on them.
9) KYC Expiration Scam
Fraudsters may call or send links, pretending to be from your bank, asking for KYC updates. Banks never call or send links for KYC updates, so always verify directly with your bank.
10) Fake Tax Refund Scam
Scammers may pose as tax officials and request your bank details for a supposed tax refund. Remember, the tax department already has your bank information and would not ask for it. They usually communicate via official channels.
With the rise of cyber crimes, it’s essential to stay cautious and verify any suspicious calls or messages. Always double-check information with official sources and report scams immediately to protect yourself and others from falling victim to these deceptive schemes.
