MUMBAI: A major fire broke out early Saturday morning in several scrap godowns located in the Sakinaka area of Kurla, Mumbai. The blaze, which spread across approximately 1,000 x 500 square feet, was quickly classified as a significant incident by authorities. However, no casualties have so far been reported.
The fire originated at the Wajid Ali Compound on Khairani Road in Sakinaka, Kurla West. It affected a vast collection of scrap and plastic materials stored on the ground floor and part of the first floor of the affected godowns. The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) confirmed that ten small hose lines were deployed to contain the flames.
To tackle the incident, 11 fire engines, nine jet tanks, aerial work platforms, and other advanced firefighting machinery were rushed to the site. An ambulance was also stationed as a precautionary measure.
Earlier this week, a similar fire erupted in a scrap godown in the Mandala area of Mankhurd, Mumbai. This incident occurred on Monday evening and spread over a larger area of 1,000 x 1,000 square feet.
The blaze in Mankhurd primarily involved electrical wiring, wooden scrap, and plastic materials stored in various units. Declared a 'Level-2' fire by the Mumbai Fire Brigade, it required four fire engines, 10 water jets, and extensive support from local civic teams to manage the situation.
Water refilling points were activated at multiple locations, including Baiganwadi Signal in Deonar, Deonar Abettor, and Panjarpol in Chembur, to ensure a continuous supply for firefighting efforts.
In both incidents, the presence of highly flammable materials, such as plastic and wooden scrap, contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. The MFB highlighted the risks involved, particularly as many structures in the affected areas were tin-roofed and load-bearing, making it dangerous for firefighters to enter during the operation.
Although the exact cause of the fires remains unclear, officials have noted that such incidents are common in these localities due to the storage of combustible materials and inadequate safety measures.
Recurring Fire Incidents in Scrap Areas - Mumbai has witnessed multiple fire incidents in scrap godowns in recent years. Authorities continue to emphasize the need for stricter fire safety regulations in such high-risk areas to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
