Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently took a jab at Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, inviting him to an "anytime, anywhere" AI showdown between the two companies' models. Pichai made these comments at the New York Times' DealBook Summit, where he also shared insights on the rapid development of artificial intelligence and upcoming changes to Google Search in 2025.
Earlier this year, Nadella had commented during an appearance on Norges Bank Investment Management’s podcast, saying, “Google should have been the default winner in the world of big tech’s AI race." In response, Pichai expressed his eagerness for a side-by-side comparison of Microsoft’s AI models and Google’s, emphasizing that Microsoft relies on external models, while Google is focused on advancing its own.
“We are preparing for the next generation of models,” Pichai said. “There’s still so much innovation ahead, and we are committed to leading in this field.”
Pichai also discussed the future of AI, noting that by 2025, many of the simpler challenges in the industry will have been tackled. "The low-hanging fruit is gone," he said. "The challenges ahead are steeper, but that’s what makes it exciting. Elite teams will shine in 2025."
When asked about the possibility of AI development slowing down in 2025, Pichai disagreed, stating, “I think AI models will continue to improve in reasoning and completing tasks more reliably. We will keep pushing the boundaries."
He acknowledged that while scaling up AI rapidly has been possible through the use of more computing power, reaching the next level will require deeper breakthroughs. "It’s not about hitting a wall," Pichai said, "but facing smaller barriers that we can overcome."
